Beside his many public and private philanthropic endeavors, Hogg was particularly known for his support of the University of Texas as a regent and in its struggle with Governor James E. Ferguson as well as his various efforts through the Ex-students' Association to improve education throughout the state and to support the establishment of student loans.

Material concerns his involvement with the city of Houston; the University of Texas and other colleges and universities; the Texas Company and other oil and gas enterprises; insurance, banking, cotton, and other businesses; political affairs, including the impeachment of Governor James Edward Ferguson, Dan Moody's election as governor in 1924, and the Democratic National Convention of 1928 in Houston; his many philanthropies and philanthropic distribution of his estate; and deals as well with other members of the Hogg family.
