Abstract: |
The Frankie Stewart Hansell Papers
reflect the personal and business relationships, travels and experiences of an
independent, career-oriented woman in the mid-twentieth century. The collection also includes information on the day to day
operations of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and
provides insights into nutritional teachings during this time period. Frankie Stewart Hansell, nutritionist, educator, world traveler and UTA alumna, was an educator and nutritionist for many years, until she joined the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1962. Two years later she was promoted to FAO Regional Nutrition Director for Asia and the Far East, the first woman to be promoted to this level within the FAO. Collection materials include correspondence, newspaper clippings,
photographs, books, publications, school notes, reports, and teaching
materials that document Hansel's personal and professional activities. |

Frankie Mae Stewart Hansell, nutritionist, educator, and
world-traveler, was born November 5, 1914, in Cooper, Texas. After her
graduation from Cooper High School in 1932, she left her family farm to enter
North Texas Agricultural College (now The University of Texas at Arlington),
where she completed a two-year course of study and received two teaching
certificates. In 1938, she earned a B. S. in Home Economics from North Texas
State University (now The University of North Texas) and then
received her M. S. in Home Economics from The University of Texas in 1942.
In the field of
nutrition, Mrs. Hansell first worked as a Home Demonstration Agent for the USDA
Agriculture Extension Service in Bexar County, Texas (1938). In New York City,
she served as Executive Secretary for the New York City Food and Home Economics
Commission, while also serving as a Nutritionist for the New York City
Department of Health. In New York, Mrs. Hansell had her own daily radio program
focusing on nutrition and helped to establish New York's first public health
clinics (1942-1947). When her husband, John, was transferred to Washington, D.
C., Mrs. Hansell went to work for the U. S. Public Health Service (1950-1951).
From 1960 through 1962, she was the head of the Nutrition Division of the
Prince George's County Health Department in Maryland.
Mrs. Hansell also
served many years as a nutritionist/health educator outside the U. S. She first
worked for USAID in the Philippines from 1951 until 1953. In 1962, Mrs. Hansell
went to work for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United
Nations. Her first assignment was in rural India. After two years, she was
promoted to FAO Regional Nutrition Director for all of Asia and the Far East,
posted in Bangkok, Thailand. Mrs. Hansell was the first woman to reach that
level of authority in the FAO. In 1970, she was transferred to the FAO
headquarters in Rome, where she was in charge of developing nutrition programs
at the request of various governments.
Mrs. Hansell retired to
Arlington, Texas in 1981, though she continued to work for the FAO on a
consulting basis. She continued her travels during her retirement and became active in the UTA
Alumni Association with many contributions and an endowed scholarship. In 1991,
Mrs. Hansell was honored as an UTA Distinguished Alumni. She died in 2000 at the age of 85.
Papers contain correspondence, newspaper clippings,
photographs, books, publications, school notes, reports, and teaching
materials. Materials
document both the personal life of Frankie Stewart Hansell and her professional career as an
educator and nutritionist.
The first series, Biographical Information, includes a biographical sketch, curriculum
vitae, passports, personal writings, legal documents and personal mementos. The
second series is Education, which consists of notes, transcripts, teaching
certificates and Mrs. Hansell's Master's degree thesis. The third series is
Correspondence, which is physically a large part of the collection. It includes
correspondence from family, close friends and business associates. This series
also includes correspondence written by Mrs. Hansell to family and friends.
Correspondence dates range from the late 1930s, to 1994 in the form of letters
and cards. The fourth series is Career, which
includes materials from her early career and her career with the Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO). FAO materials make up the bulk of this series
and a large part of the collection as a whole. It includes correspondence,
interoffice communications, pamphlets, reports, reading/teaching materials and
newspaper clippings. The fifth series, Photographs, consists of photographs
from approximately 1912 to 1991. The photographs are primarily of family, friends and
Mrs. Hansell's travels for business or pleasure. The sixth series is Books and
Publications. It consists of FAO books and publications, as well as other such
items relating to Mrs. Hansell's interest in nutrition.

Gift of Frankie Stewart Hansell,1994-1995.
Frankie Stewart Hansell Papers, AR380, Box Number, Folder Number, Special Collections, The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries.
Within the collection, if an original order existed, it was maintained. Groups in Series III were as Mrs. Hansell organized them, she also provided details for certain people in this series. In Series IV are Mrs. Hansell own personal FAO files as well as rescued official office files which were normally purged over time. In Series V, the bulk of the photographs were arranged by Mrs. Hansell into chronological groups for which she provided explanations for some; the explanations were photocopied onto acid-free paper and included after the corresponding photograph or group of photographs. Newspaper clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper, and the originals were returned to Mrs. Hansell. Duplicates were also returned, as were books and publications that were not related to nutrition.
Grant Support
The retrospective updating and conversion of this finding aid was supported with funds from the National Historical Publications & Records Commission (NHPRC) for the Special Collections "Documenting Democracy: Access to Historical Records" project, 2014-2015.
Some documents are on thin, fragile paper and
should be handled carefully. Some items may not appear to be in chronological
order, but they remain in original FAO file organization. Other FAO papers may
appear to be out of chronological order because they had been grouped together
under a cover-letter or routing slip.
Books and slides added after the
finding aid was completed were placed in Boxes 27 to 29 at the end of the
collection. These items were not included in the series or scope and content
notes descriptions. Oversize items noted as removed from the collection were
placed in Oversize Box 304. The contents of Boxes 27 to 29 and Oversize Box 304
are described beginning on page 25 of the container list.
