Abstract: |
The Arlington Journal was established July 30, 1897, and was the first newspaper published in Arlington. The Arlington Citizen was established October 4, 1934. In 1957, these two publications merged to create the Arlington Citizen Journal, which became the largest paid newspaper in Arlington. The Arlington Citizen Journal was later purchased by the publishers of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram but continued to publish a weekly edition under its existing name. Star-Telegram Operating Ltd. took over the publication on July 4, 1996, and changed its name to the Arlington Star-Telegram. The collection is comprised of black and white photographs, 8x10" and smaller, from the Arlington Citizen Journal, including some negatives and one color print. The photographs range in date from 1865 to 1968, and contain prints of buildings, events, landmarks, people, schools and street scenes in the Arlington area. The most notable photographs include images of Arlington Downs; Arlington State College/University of Texas at Arlington including the 1957 Junior Rose Bowl game; General Motors plant; Mineral Well; schools; and local businesses. |

The collection is comprised of black and white photographs, 8x10" and smaller, from the Arlington Citizen Journal, including some negatives and one color print. The photographs range in date from 1865 to 1968, and contain prints of buildings, events, landmarks, people, schools and street scenes in the Arlington area. The most notable photographs include images of Arlington Downs; Arlington State College/University of Texas at Arlington including the 1957 Junior Rose Bowl game; General Motors plant; Mineral Well; schools; and local businesses. The photographs are the work of various photographers. Many of the photographs are not identified nor dated. A list describing the photographs was compiled by the donor and is included with the collection. Those photographs with negatives have been so noted.
