Abstract: John, or Jack, McCarthy started his career with the Santa Fe Railroad in 1913 as the yardmaster in Fort Worth. McCarthy retired on February 28, 1959 after fifty total years of railroading. This collection consists of a spiral bound notebook containing McCarthy’s personal and professional correspondence.

Biographical Note

John, or Jack, McCarthy started work as a student brakeman for the Rock Island Railway in 1908. His career with the Santa Fe Railroad began in 1913 when he took the position of yardmaster in Fort Worth. While working for the railroad in Fort Worth, McCarthy served on a number of boards, councils, and committees including the Santa Fe Ration Board, Railway Citizen League, Railroad Yardmaster of America, and the chairman of the committee to raise money for the 1949 flood. He organized the Santa Fe Club in 1927. McCarthy retired on February 28, 1959, after fifty years of railroading.

Scope and Contents

The John McCarthy Correspondence is comprised of a spiral bound notebook containing his various professional and personal correspondence. These letters include discussions of the Trinity River Canal District, and the origin of the Santa Fe Railway emblem. McCarthy's collection contains letters from various local and State politicians including Governor James V. Allred, Railroad Commissioner Ernest O. Thompson, Congressman Jim Wright, and Texas Attorney General William McCraw.
