Texas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium Photograph Album:
Winnie Tennyson (1897-1935) was born in Vernon, Texas. She was admitted to the Texas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium in 1929. The sanatorium, which opened in 1912, was located Sanatorium, Texas, near Carlsbad. The site also housed a nursing school because it was difficult to retain nurses due to both the fear of tuberculosis and the geographic isolation of the institution. Many of the nursing candidates were themselves recovering tuberculosis patients.
This small photo album, constructed by Winnie Tennyson, contains over 76 black and white silver gelatin images, ephemera, and photo postcards. The album is well-captioned in white album pen and contains some original poetry. The images in the album depict many of the nurses, doctors and other patients of the Texas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium as well as costume parties, Sunday school classes, and excursions.
