Biographical Note

Dr. Lloyd Carr Taliaferro served for thirty years as a faculty member of the UT Arlington Music Department. He filled the positions of theory and composition professor and coordinator, Music Department assistant chair and interim department chair. Before coming to the university, Taliaferro served in the U.S. Army. He played French horn in the Sixth Army’s Hospital Band at Presidio in San Francisco, followed by service in troop information and education at Camp Irwin, California. After earning his doctorate from the University of North Texas, he was hired by UTA as the first faculty member with a doctoral degree in the Music Department. Taliaferro led the development of the program’s curriculum and the transition from a two-year program to a four-year, degree-granting program during the late 1960s. He taught electronic music and founded the Electronic Music Lab. He was awarded a Gubernatorial Citation for his compositions, which have been performed in Mexico City, Dallas and at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. After his retirement in 1987, the department awarded Taliaferro the title of professor emeritus in 1989. Taliaferro composed more than 100 works of music, including solo, chamber, choral, opera and instrumental pieces. Taliaferro died in 1999.
