Biographical Sketch

Terms in office for the five Texas Tech University administrations represented in this collection are: Dr. Edward N. Jones (1952-1959), Dr. Robert Cabiness Goodwin (1960-1966), Dr. Grover E. Murrary (1966-1976), Dr. Cecil Mackey (196-1979), and Dr. Lauro F. Cavazos Jr. (1980-1988).

Edward Newton Jones was the sixth president of Texas Technological College. He was president from 1952 until 1959. A native Kansan, E.N. Jones earned his doctorate in botany at the University of Iowa. He was dean of arts and sciences at Baylor University and president of Texas A and I College before becoming Tech's first vice president in 1948. In his presidency, Tech joined the Southwest Conference in 1956; received the federal license for KTXT-TV; expanded degree programs; strengthened the Southwest Collection; and instituted a computer center. The first tenure policy committee was named. Increased enrollment made Tech the state's second largest college. Jones died March 8, 1984.

Robert Cabiness Goodwin was the seventh president of Texas Technological College. He was president from 1960 until 1966. A native of Brownwood, R.C. Goodwin earned his doctorate at Harvard and taught chemistry at the University of Florida. During a 37-year career at Texas Technological College, he was professor and head of the department of chemistry and chemical engineering, dean of the graduate division, dean of the college of arts and sciences, vice president for academic affairs, and interim president. During his administration the state-coordinating board recognized Texas Technological College as one of four state supported graduate institutions.

The collection begins with Dr. Grover E. Murray's service as President of Texas Tech University from 1966 until his retirement in 1976. A geologist and former vice-president of academic affairs for Louisiana State University, Dr. Murray was the eighth president of the university. During his presidency, Tech experienced its greatest period of expansion. The university received approval to establish a Law School and a Medical School in Lubbock with branches in Amarillo, E1 Paso, and Midland-Odessa. Tech also received approval for Schools of Allied Health Services, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine. In addition, the International Center for Arid and Semi-arid Land Studies (ICASALS), the Ranching Heritage Center, and the Center at Junction were developed during his presidency. Upon retiring as president of the university, Dr. Murray was named University Professor.

When Dr. Murray stepped down in August 1976, he was succeeded by Dr. Cecil Mackey, who became Tech's ninth president. He was instrumental in the formation of the Faculty Senate as a governing body on campus. Also, Dr. Mackey stressed long-range planning and initiated procedures for more efficient management and use of resources. Under his term, the Texas Tech School of Medicine received full accreditation. He resigned in 1979 to become president of Michigan State University.

Dr. Lauro Cavazos served as Texas Tech University's tenth president and served from 1980 until his resignation in 1988. He was the first Texas Tech graduate to become president of the university. Cavazos received his Bachelor of Arts in zoology and his Master's degree in cytology from Texas Tech. Undergraduate admissions standards increased under Cavazos's tenure. In addition, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center experienced tremendous growth during this time.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of office files from the President's Office of Texas Tech University during the term of five presidents. Included are correspondence, departmental and college reports, various committee and council meeting minutes and agendas, and files on topics such as faculty leave and tenure. The folder entitled "Campus Ministries: Correspondence, Pamphlets, and Articles" contains an editorial piece on integration at Tech, which might be of use to researchers interested in diversity at the university. Folders 18 and 19 in Box 4 were purged per the university's retention schedule as they contained correspondence pertaining to students' academic performance.
