Biographical Sketch

Terms in office for the four Texas Tech University administrations represented in this collection are: David Schmidly (2000-2003), Jon Whitmore (2003-2008), Guy Bailey (2008-2012), and Duane Nellis (2013-2016).

When Dr. Haragan stepped down in 2000, he was succeeded by Dr. David Schmidly, who became Tech's thirteenth president. Dr. Schmidly came to Tech in 1996 as graduate dean and also served as vice president for research and graduate studies. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Tech. As president, Dr. Schmidly initiated the university strategic plan and was instrumental in hiring Bob Knight as the men’s basketball coach. Dr. Schmidly also authored the book, Texas Natural History: A Century of Change. He resigned in 2002 to become president of Oklahoma State University.

Jon Scott Whitmore was selected as the fourteenth president of Texas Tech University in 2003. He served in this capacity until February of 2008 when he stepped down from his administrative position to focus on teaching. He left Texas in 2008 to assume the presidency of San Jose State University for two years. In 2010 he moved back to Iowa City to take the position of chief executive officer of ACT.

Guy Hubert Bailey was hired in 2008 as the fifteenth president of Texas Tech University. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Alabama and his wife, Jan Tillery, was a Texas Tech graduate. Prior to coming to Lubbock, Bailey held the university administrative positions of provost at the University of Texas at San Antonio and chancellor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He left Texas Tech in 2012 to accept a short lived position of president at the University of Alabama for about two month. In 2014 he was appointed president of the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Lawrence Schovanec served as interim president at Texas Tech from August 2012 through June 2013.

Marvin Duane Nellis was born on July 26, 1954 and earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in geography. He was appointed the sixteenth president of Texas Tech University in 2013, a position he would hold for three years. Afterwards, Nellis continued to work at Tech as a tenured faculty member. In 2017, he was hired as the 21st president of Ohio University.
