Biographical Sketch

Terms in office for the four Texas Tech University administrations represented in this collection are: Dr. William M. Whyburn (1944-1948), Dossie Marion Wiggins (1948-1952), Dr. Edward N. Jones (1952-1959), and Dr. Robert Cabiness Goodwin (1960-1966).

William Marvin Whyburn was born in Denton County, Texas, on November 12, 1901. He received his undergraduate education at North Texas State College and the University of Texas at Austin. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin under while teaching at Texas Technological College. Whyburn was a National Research Fellow at Harvard University before joining the faculty of the University of California-Los Angeles, where he became Mathematics Department chairman. Whyburn returned to Texas Technological College and was president of the College from 1944 until 1948. He was appointed as Kenan Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Department chairman at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Whyburn also served as Acting Provost and Vice President for Research at the University of North Carolina. After his retirement from the University of North Carolina in 1967, Whyburn was Frensley Professor of Mathematics at Southern Methodist University until 1970, when he returned to Chapel Hill and teaching part time at Eastern Carolina University. He died in 1972.

Dossie Marion Wiggins was born in Crowley Louisiana on December 9, 1895. He attended Hardin-Simmons University where he graduated magna cum laude in 1919. Wiggins served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a principal, coach, and superintendent for several public school districts in the Texas panhandle region. Dr. Wiggins graduated with his master’s degree and PhD from Yale University. Prior to assuming the position as president of Texas Technological College, Dr. Wiggins was Dean of Students and Professor of Education at Hardin-Simmons from 1926 to 1935 and was president of Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (now University of Texas at El Paso) from 1935 until 1948. He was president of Texas Technological College from 1948 until 1952 when he resigned and assumed a position in banking. Dr. Dossie Marion Wiggins died on September 1, 1978.

Edward Newton Jones was the sixth president of Texas Technological College. He was president from 1952 until 1959. A native Kansan, E.N. Jones earned his doctorate in botany at the University of Iowa. He was dean of arts and sciences at Baylor university and president of Texas A and I College before becoming Tech's first vice president in 1948. In his presidency, Tech joined the southwest conference IN 1956; received the federal license for KTXT-TV; expanded degree programs; strengthened the Southwest collection; and instituted a computer center. The first tenure policy committee was named. Increased enrollment made tech the state's second largest college. Jones died March 8, 1984.

Robert Cabiness Goodwin was the seventh president of Texas Technological College. He was president from 1960 until 1966. A native of Brownwood, R.C. Goodwin earned his doctorate at Harvard and taught chemistry at the University of Florida. During a 37-year career at Texas Technological College, he was professor and head of the department of chemistry and chemical engineering, dean of the graduate division, dean of the college of arts and sciences, vice president for academic affairs, and interim president. During his administration the state-coordinating board recognized Texas Technological College as one of four state supported graduate institutions.
