Biographical Sketch

Dr. Susan Tomlinson is a botanical artist, writer, and teacher. She holds a BFA in Studio Art, and an MS and Ph.D. in Geology. As an Associate Professor in the Honors College at Texas Tech University, she teaches interdisciplinary studies in nature and the arts. Tomlinson is the recipient of the TTU Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Teaching Award, the TTU President’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Spencer G. Wells Creativity in Teaching Award. She is a member of the Texas Tech Teaching Academy and the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) Board of Directors.

Developed as a textbook for a course Tomlinson teaches, her book How to Keep a Naturalist’s Notebook introduces drawing and writing about our experiences with nature. Tomlinson includes instruction on field gear, field sketching, identifying birds and wildflowers, and journaling.

The collection contains drafts, notes, drawings, photographs, and media for How to Keep a Naturalist’s Notebook. It also contains other essays and articles written by Tomlinson.

The collection is in good condition and is part of the James Sowell Family Collection in Literature, Community and the Natural World.

Organization

The collection is organized by project title and material format into the following series:
Folder titles in quotations indicate the title was transcribed from the original folder.
Items containing restricted information were duplicated with the restricted information redacted. Originals were not retained.
Photographs on media were printed by SWC/SCL Library staff.

Access Restrictions

The collection is open for research.

Some archival collections may be housed in storage outside of the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library building. Requests to retrieve such materials may take up to 10 business days to complete. Please contact our Reference Department to arrange retrieval.

Audio, video, and film recordings may not be immediately accessible due to format, condition, or copyright status. All items must be digitized prior to patron use. Because not all collections materials have been digitized, please contact the Reference Archivist at least 10 days prior to arrival in order to coordinate digitization. Though we can digitize much of our holdings within two weeks, some media may be fragile and require specialized digitization outsourcing, which can take up to three months for completion.
