Biographical Sketch

Dalis Allen was born in New York and raised in Houston. She attended the University of Houston, where she had her first encounter with the Kerrville Folk Festival producer, Rod Kennedy, when Kennedy produced a show for the Longhorn Jazz Ensemble there. Allen headed up a university committee that hosted other concerts including John Denver, Judy Collins, and Linda Ronstadt. In 1972 Allen attended the premiere Kerrville Folk Festival and soon after joined Kennedy's staff. Her management skills and relationships in the musical community blossomed in Kerrville.

In 1999, Allen, Kennedy, and Vaughn Hafner reached out to the folksong community to discover if there was interest in creating an area group within the Folk Alliance International (previously known as the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance). There was, and in 2000 the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance (SWRFA) became one of the five regional branches in North America with Dalis Allen at the helm. In 2002 Rod Kennedy retired and Allen assumed the reins at the Kerrville Folk Festival as well. She also travels as a panelist to other folk conferences and songwriting retreats, built her own talent agency called Dalis Books!, and is penning a history of the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
