Biographical Sketch

The American Agriculture Movement (AAM) was formed in 1977 in response to Congressional legislation entailing four years of farm prices below the cost of production. In many states, farmers organized protests, strikes, pickets, boycotts, and marches on state capitols and on Washington, D.C. (1977-1979). In February 1979, thousands of farmers converged on Washington, D.C., in a tractorcade organized by AAM. Following this event, the AAM established a Washington office to bring farmers' voices to Congress and the Administration. Many of the materials relate to Norman and Mary Harper of Kansas, who were involved with the movement.

Scope and Content

The American Agriculture Movement (AAM) Records consists of correspondence, financial material, legal documents, news clippings, slide photographs, and related material describing the operations of the organization from 1977-1996. Many of the clippings relate to the "Gas-O-Hol Oil Crisis" of the late 1970s. 6 scrapbooks, a poster, and a single decal are also present.

The records were found abandoned in a former American Agriculture Movement storage facility in Campo, Colorado.

Our digital collections host 231 issues of the American Agriculture News, a newsletter published in Iredell, Texas, from the 1970s through the 1980s. Additional photo albums of American Agriculture Movement-related events, among them the 1979 Tractorcade, may also be found in that digital collection.
