Kimmie Rhodes is a native Texan who began her singing career at the age of six with her
family gospel trio. Raised in Lubbock, Texas, she listened to Buddy Holly, Bob Wills, Lefty
Frizzell, and gospel music, but also to the Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Dylan,
and even Broadway musicals, so her music is a rich combination of influences so typical of
Texans of her era. As an adult, she moved to her family's farm near the Red River and farmed
and raised cattle there for ten years. It was during this time that she began to write
poetry and learned to play the guitar, progressing naturally to songwriting while in those
beautiful and serene surroundings.
In 1979 Rhodes moved to Austin, where she met producer and husband of 28 years, Joe Gracey.
In 1981, when Willie Nelson invited her to use his studio on the Pedernales River, she
recorded her first album, Kimmie Rhodes and the Jackalope
Brothers, for Gracey's Jackalope Records. She recorded her second album, Man In The Moon, in 1985. Her third album, Angels Get The Blues, recorded at the original Sun Studio in Memphis, was released
in 1989. These records, released on an English label, led to a series of British and
European tours which received rave reviews. London's Q Magazine
said, “Kimmie is one of those magical Texans who manages to combine country and rock
influences into a seamless blend.” British Vogue Magazine said,
“This is a voice you can listen to all day....”
Her promotional tours created a solid fan base in the U.K. and Europe. She has headlined
with her band at festivals in Britain, Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands,
often with her son and producer, Gabriel Rhodes, and has appeared on many European and
American TV and radio broadcasts. She has also performed at several of Willie's Farm Aid
concerts and July 4th Picnics. Willie said Kimmie is “an undiscovered superstar,” and
together they recorded two of her originals for his album Just One
Love on Justice Records.
By the Fall of 2015, Rhodes produced 16 solo albums, written and performed several plays
with Joe Sears of Greater Tuna fame, written music for Sears'
production of an outdoor drama performed by the Cherokee Nation, Trail
of Tears, for which she was also Musical Director. Other plays, including Small Town Girl and Hillbilly Heaven
have reflected upon her West Texas heritage. She catalogued hundreds of additional songs,
including multi-platinum hits for other artists and soundtrack entries for film and
television. She published a cookbook and in the Spring 2018 completed a memoir of her three
decades with Joe Gracey that includes his notes and journals.
Adapted from her bio for Justice Records and personal correspondence
in the collection.

Manuscripts, including original autographic journals and lyrics workbooks, are organized by
date within their categories. Media is generally grouped by function and filed by date
within media type. Rhodes marked 34 audio cassette tapes for digitization. Those are labeled
[KRnumber]. Sections of the gift which remain to be processed include a vast trove of
photographs from her family and the Gracey pioneer ranching family, which are being
digitized and returned, and the costumes and props from her theatrical productions. The
collection is in good condition except as noted and is part of the Crossroads of Music
archive.
