Biographical Sketch

Margaret Talbutt Ferguson was born in Osage County, Oklahoma, on August 9, 1920. Her father was Dr. Dillard E. Talbutt and her older brother was also named Dillard. At the end of World War II she was married briefly, which produced son, Keith Ferguson, in 1946. Margaret and Keith relocated to Houston, Texas, where she worked for Humble-Exxon for 37 years. She began traveling the world regularly in 1968 and made scrapbook-type folders on every trip. In 1983, she took early retirement to care for her mother in Austin and be near her son, the noted left-handed electric bass player and Grammy award nominee.

Keith died in 1997, and Margaret was surrounded by his friends at his memorial “planting”, as well as an annual concert, of which there are photographs and a guest register in the collection. After that, her main occupation was travel, church and charity work, and writing letters to her many friends and family. Margaret died peacefully at her home in Austin, just three weeks after her 96th birthday in 2016.

Her papers, photgraphs, and artifacts were donated to the Crossroads of Music Archive of the Southwest Collection/Special Collection Library at Texas Tech University by Conni Hancock of the Texana Dames and Margaret's cousin, Craig Estes. Keith Ferguson's collection is also in the archive.

Scope and Content

The collection includes artwork from the collections of both Margaret and Keith Ferguson. Other material relates to Margaret's childhood, career, finances, travels, and genealogy. There is a memorial booklet from the death of her father in 1947, photographs and a guest book from Keith's memorial. Photographs are filed chronologically within subject matter groups.

The travel files (1968 through 2016) contain the business paperwork, brochures, maps, postcards, diaries of each day's events with some notes in office shorthand, sales slips and shopping bags, photographs, and correspondence with fellow travelers, plus magazine and newspaper articles about the locale. Many of the larger maps are stored separately in an oversize folder. Travel photographs and correspondence are filed with the other records from the same trip. Colorful, handcrafted artifacts/travel souvenirs fill four boxes and are mostly sorted by material as space allowed; wood, glass, metal, ceramics, minerals, and textiles. Some items showed signs of breakage and repair.

The collection is in good condition except where noted, and is part of the Crossroads of Music Archive.

The Margaret Talbutt Ferguson Papers are organized by the following series:
