Biographical Sketch

Walter Howlison Mackenzie ("Zarh") Pritchard (1866-1956) was an artist best known for painting underwater landscapes while underwater. Pritchard was born in Madras, India, of Irish ancestry. At age 10, he was sent to school in Scotland, and soon developed an interest in painting, specifically underwater scenes. Pritchard took art classes in college at Edinburgh. Following the initial failure of his underwater paintings, he found some success in 1890 as a costume and set designer for various theaters in London. In 1902, Pritchard was diagnosed with pneumonia and moved to Southern California to recuperate. There, he began to experiment with painting the fish and coral reefs of the coast while underwater. He achieved this feat by using crayons on paper that had been taped to glass, then oiled. In 1904, Pritchard traveled to Tahiti where he painted while wearing a diving suit, painting on canvas with oil-soaked brushes. This began Zarh Pritchard's career in producing pieces of work depicting landscapes, both above sea and below, and marine life. This artistic focus would take him across the world and place him in correspondence with a variety of people including Queen Mary of Teck, Percy Fawcett (a British explorer who disappeared in the Amazon Jungle in 1925), noted portrait painter Frank O. Salisbury, and others. In 1949, at the end of his career, Pritchard moved to Austin, Texas, in an unsuccessful attempt to secure a position teaching art at the University of Texas at Austin. He lost money in real estate ventures, and died in 1956 nearly penniless, living on a small pension from the State of Texas which he had gained with the help of Walter Long and Lolla Peterson.

Zarh Pritchard maintained an interest in numerology and the occult. The former would become a driving factor in many aspects of Zarh Pritchard's life. Through numerological calculations, Walter Pritchard decided upon the name "Zarh" as the "vibrations" of the name suited him better and encouraged success. Numerology also drove him to choose Austin as his place of residence in the last years of his life.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Zarh Pritchard, born Walter Howlison Mackenzie Pritchard, was an artist best known for painting underwater landscapes while underwater. The Zarh Pritchard collection documents his work, travels, and interest in numerology and the occult. Included are letter and card correspondence; pamphlets and invitations; administrative files detailing his personal finances, business dealings, and properties; books and literary efforts; magazine and newspaper clippings; memorabilia collected through his travels, friendships, and business dealings; photographs, drawings, and postcards; and artifacts and artwork. Dates covered are about 1870s-1959, undated, bulk 1904-1953.

Letter correspondence documents personal relationships and business dealings throughout Pritchard's life. Notable figures whom Pritchard corresponded with include Prince Albert I of Monaco, Queen Mary of England, and British explorer Percy Fawcett. Letter correspondence also contains letters detailing Zarh Pritchard's interest in the field of numerology, his decision to change his name, and his decision to move to Austin. Dates are 1873-1951, undated.

Pamphlets and invitations contain pamphlets on a range of subjects of interest to Pritchard such as numerology, Egyptology, ichthyology, zoology, art, and geography. While these pamphlets come from several sources such as the New York Zoological Society, the New York Aquarium, and the American Museum of Natural History, the most prolific source is the National Geographic Society. Also present are invitations documenting the many locations in which Zarh Pritchard's work was shown, including the Arlington Gallery, the Galerie Georges Petit (the gallery of noted 19th and early 20th century Parisian art collector Georges Petit), the Seimei Hoken Kyokai Building in Japan, the Grace Nicholson Gallery, the Gieves Art Gallery, the National Arts Club, the Gertrude Fogler Studios, and many others. Dates are 1907-1952.

Administrative files include records documenting Pritchard's financial holdings over the course of his life, checks for his paintings, last will and testaments, blueprints and architectural drawings of his California home and designs of his own imagining, address books for his various correspondents, and diaries. The series also contains files on numerology showing the decision-making process Zarh Pritchard used to choose both the name Zarh and to reside in Austin, Texas, in his later years. Dates are 1903-1953, 1959, undated.

Books and literary efforts contain books relevant to Pritchard's interest in travel, architecture, art, geography, and numerology. Also included are poems and short stories by Pritchard and his close associates. Dates are 1874-1952, undated.

Memorabilia comprises various items collected during Pritchard's worldwide travels, including dinner invitations, cruise line dinner menus, informational packets on places visited, museum membership cards, passports and visas, Japanese notebooks, and a prayer sheet. Dates are 1886-1953, undated.

Magazine and newspaper clippings detail his interest in politics with numerous clippings from journalist Westbrook Pegler. Newspaper clippings also include articles on geography, zoology, and cartoons, as well as clippings from newspapers in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese that highlight Pritchard and his work. Magazine clippings focus on his artistic and zoological interests with the majority of clippings coming from the National Geographic. Dates are 1906-1953.

Card correspondence serves much the same purpose as letter correspondence. Cards reflect his personal and professional connections made over his long life and career. Many cards are simple conversations concerning his health and activities between holidays and birthdays. Dates are 1926-1953, undated.

Photographs, drawings, and postcards consist mainly of black-and-white photographic prints, but also includes cartes-de-visite, cabinet photographs, stereographs, photographic postcards, postcards, nitrate negatives, lantern slides, and drawings. Little given information exists as to the location, date, and subject of many of the items in this series. Labeled items depict Pritchard's travels across Arizona, California, Hawaii, the American Midwest, Japan, Portugal, Scotland, France, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), and Switzerland; self-portrait photographs; his friends Rullar, Rulo, and John Tee-Van (a noted American ichthyologist and zookeeper); and other correspondents. Many of his usual locations in Hawaii, California, Tahiti, the Philippines, and Japan are depicted. Dates are about 1870s-about 1950s, undated.

Artifacts and artwork contain belongings of Pritchard including a ceremonial apron, a cushion, a bedspread, a wall hanging, two rugs, and two abstract paintings with Pritchard's signature on their reverse. Also included are two undersea paintings at Coral Caverns in Tahiti by Pritchard. Dates are 1890-1950.

[This painting is framed without glass. Pritchard first created undersea paintings in Tahiti in 1904 and continued until perhaps the 1920s. Framer's notes on this painting's backing paper say the back of the painting is signed by Pritchard with the year 1894 also written. This discrepancy of date of creation of the painting has not been resolved.]
