Abstract: William D. Middleton was a civil engineer, noted railroad historian, and author. He retired as a commander from the United States Navy before serving as chief facilities officer for the University of Virginia. This collection includes his manuscripts, correspondence, personal papers, and train ephemera.

Biographical Note

William Drummond Middleton Jr. was born March 25, 1928 in Davenport, Iowa. In 1950 he earned his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and later attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin in 1954. He registered as a professional engineer in the state of Wisconsin in 1955.

From 1950 to 1979, Middleton was a civil engineer for the United States Navy and retired as a commander. After retiring from the Navy, he was the chief facilities officer at the University of Virginia, before he retired again in 1993. From the 1950s until 2011 he was an active railroad historian and writer who published over twenty books and numerous magazine articles.

Middleton was also known for his railroad photography, which was published in Trains and Railway Age. In 1956 he married Dorothy Hagman and they had two sons: Nicholas and William III. William Middleton died in Livonia, New York on June 11, 2011.

Scope and Contents Note

William Middleton’s papers reflect his long career as a writer on railroads, light rail, and bridges. The bulk of his collection consists of his book and article manuscripts in the first series. The second series documents almost sixty years of participation in various railroad history organizations and special events.

The third and fourth series contain publishing and general correspondence. Middleton’s personal papers are placed at the end of the collection and includes documents regarding his naval career, position at the University of Virginia, his copyright certificates; some photographs; subject files; and train ephemera. The last box in the collection contains video recordings on various railroad subjects.

Materials were transferred to acid free folders. Seven linear feet of annual reports, timetables, and corporate promotional brochures were transferred to general DeGolyer ephemera collections.

Books were removed from the collection, cataloged, and can be found by searching the online catalog with the search string "Part of the William Middleton collection."

Cynthia Franco processed the collection and encoded the finding aid in 2020.
