Abstract: Kenda North is a Dallas photographer known for her work with color processes and doing innovative work with dye transfer materials in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her career has been marked by consistent experimentation and techniques of available color processes. North is professor of photography at the University of Texas, Arlington. Her collection includes various color processes, hand colored dye transfer prints, Polaroids, Cibachrome prints, notebooks, invitations for exhibitions in which she showed work, and announcements.

Biographical Note

Kenda North has been making fine art photographs for over 30 years. She earned an MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, New York through New York State University at Brockport. In 1976, and she received her BA in Fine Arts from Colorado College. She studied dye transfer printing with Larry McPherson, Chicago, and studied at the Institute for European Studies, Vienna, Austria in the 1970s. The list of North’s exhibitions and awards is long. She participated in more than 150 group exhibitions and many one and two person shows including those in Italy, Japan, California, Chicago, Rochester, and Dallas. From 1989 to the present, North has been professor of photography at the University of Texas, Arlington.

Scope and Contents Note

The North collection consists of 1,059 photographic prints and large framed pieces. The majority are in various color processes. There are hand colored dye transfer prints from the 1970s and 1980s, Polaroids, and Cibachrome prints. Also included are notebooks, her exhibition invitations and announcements.

Series 2: Framed and oversize prints, , 2000-2013

Series consists of large prints of various subjects, some underwater, some framed, stored on flat shelves. Initiated in 2012, North had worked extensively with the human figure underwater and returned to the project once it was possible to work digitally.

North describes them, “The images in the series “Urban Pools” are figurative tableaus photographed underwater. They are a metaphor for emotional tensions, the daily struggle between liberation and constraint…. The photographs are made on film (with a 35mm underwater camera), transferred to digital format and printed as large-scale Iris Giclee prints on Hahnemuhle paper, editioned to 8….”
