Dallas Glass Club records, 1937-2014
Myrtle Hayes organized the Dallas Glass Club on November 15th, 1937. The purpose of the Dallas Glass Club was to discuss, appreciate and learn about various glassmaking styles and techniques making the club a popular resource for museums and antique collectors. Members of the Glass Club built a glass collection with the hope it would find a home in a local art museum. Pieces of the collection were featured in the Fine Arts Museum in Dallas, Fondren Library and McFarlin Auditorium at Southern Methodist University, Millermore, Linz Jewelers and the Hamon room of the Dallas Museum of Art. The Dallas Glass Club incorporated in 1975 and continued to raise money for the purchase of rare glass objects. In 1991 the membership committed to a campaign with the Dallas Museum of Art to gift their collection to the museum and to raise funds to sponsor the Decorative Arts Study Gallery in the new Hamon Building. They succeeded in raising $100,000 to endow the study gallery. Along with exhibiting pieces from the American glass donated by members of the Dallas Glass Club, the museum agreed to continue acquiring new pieces, and to host “hands-on” glass workshops from time to time. Construction began on the addition of the Nancy and Jake L. Hamon Building in 1991 and it opened to the public on September 26, 1993.
The Dallas Glass Club records are comprised of administrative records, directories, meeting records, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, brochures and other printed materials. Materials dated 1991-1993 cover the campaign to endow the Decorative Arts Study Gallery at the Dallas Museum of Art.
