Historical Note

The P.E.O. Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization) was founded on January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa to promote educational opportunities for women, and to assist women with their educational goals. Originally founded as a college sorority, a vote in 1902 changed it from a college group to a community.

On September 4, 1902 the first chapter of P.E.O. in Texas opened in Whitesboro. Mary Florence Tinsman Cowell, the founder of Whitesboro Chapter A, was the first president of Texas State Chapter of P.E.O. The BC chapter in Dallas, was organized on December 16, 1944 by state organizer Lelia Lilly. Mary Souder served as the first chapter president from 1944-1947.

The organization maintains six educational projects in the form of grants, scholarships and loans as well as the stewardship of Cottey College. Cottey College was founded in 1884 in Nevada, Missouri by Virginia Alice Cottey. She bequeathed the College to the P.E.O. Sisterhood in 1927, making it the only nonsectarian college owned and supported by women.
