Biographical Note

Jack Elliot Myers was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1941 and developed an early interest in poetry and creative writing. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from the University of Massachusetts, he attended the Iowa Writers Workshop. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from the University of Iowa in 1972. Myers later moved to Dallas to begin a career lasting more than thirty years as a member of the English faculty at Southern Methodist University. He taught poetry and rhetoric at SMU, and directed the creative writing program from 2001-2009.

The Writer’s Garret was co-founded in 1994 by Jack Myers and his wife, Thea Temple. This Dallas organization’s mission is “to foster the education and development of readers, writers, and audiences, by putting them in touch with quality literature, each other, and the communities in which they live and write.” He continued to serve on the board of the Writer’s Garret for the rest of his life.

In 2003 Jack Myers was named Texas Poet Laureate. He published twenty books and appeared in numerous anthologies throughout his career. Major works include:

  • The Family War (1977)
  • A Trout in the Milk: A Composite Portrait of Richard Hugo (1980)
  • New American Poets of the 80s (1984)
  • The Longman Dictionary of Poetic Terms (1985)
  • New American Poets of the 90s (1991)
  • Dictionary of Poetic Terms (2003)
  • The Poet’s Portable Workshop (2004)

Jack Myers died at his home in Mesquite, Texas, in 2009. He was married three times and had three children.
