Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library at the Alamo, San Antonio, Texas |
The roots of the Eagar family go back to the early days of Anglo-American settlement in San Antonio, Texas. Wilson I. Riddle, born in Ireland about 1812, immigrated to the United States as a child with his family and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Riddle moved to Tennessee and from there went to Texas in 1839, working as a merchant and land speculator. He returned to Tennessee briefly in 1840 and while there married Elizabeth Mary Menafee (1820-1890). The couple returned to Texas, where their two children Sarah Elizabeth (1842-1947), reputedly the first Anglo child born in San Antonio, and James W. Riddle were born.
Wilson Riddle was taken prisoner during the invasion of San Antonio by a Mexican force under Adrian Woll in 1842 and was imprisoned in Mexico until 1843. His health damaged by the experience, he died in San Antonio in 1847. His widow married Harvey Canterbury in 1851 and had at least three more children: John W., Mildred L., and Harvey Canterbury. Elizabeth's second husband died in 1859.
In 1866, Sarah Elizabeth Riddle married Robert Eagar (1830-1883), a native of Canada who had lived in San Antonio since 1850. The couple's three children, Fannie and twins Florence and Blanche, were born in a house on South Alamo Street that would remain the family residence for over one-hundred years. Robert Eagar was involved in real estate, freighting, and other business ventures in San Antonio prior to his death in 1883.
The Eagars were socially active and involved in a number of organizations. Mrs. Eagar and her daughters were early members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) and active in the organization. Florence Eagar was one of the first Custodians of the Alamo after the DRT was granted custody of the site in 1905. Her mother, Sarah Eagar, took over the position when Florence married Major Harris L. Roberts in 1907 and followed her husband to his assignment in the Philippines. Roberts' Army assignments later took him to Ft. Bliss in Texas, Hawaii, and Detroit before his death in 1918. Harris and Florence Roberts had one child, Robert Pierpont Eagar Roberts.
Both Sarah Eagar and Florence Roberts remained active in the community throughout their long lives. Mrs. Eagar died in 1947 at the age of 105. Mrs. Roberts lived in the family home until the HemisFair project forced her to move in 1967. She died in 1969 at the age of 102.

Series 1: Personal papers |
|
The personal papers document several family members, beginning with letters received by Robert Eagar, which cover various business matters, dating from the 1870s and 1880s. Letters sent to Sarah Eagar and Florence Eagar Roberts are generally from friends and family; letters received by Harris L. Roberts refer to income tax and insurance matters. |
|
Much of the printed material appears to be related to Sarah Eagar and Florence Eagar Roberts. Included are a number of periodicals, including some locally published literary, social, and political journals. A number of complete or nearly complete San Antonio newspapers are part of the papers, most of them dating from the early 1900s to 1920s, several containing articles on the Alamo, San Antonio history, or political and social events. Newspaper clippings document the Alamo, San Antonio and Texas events and history, and several individuals, including family members. Booklets, programs, and other printed items document events in San Antonio throughout the first few decades of the 1900s. |
|
Financial documents include a number of bills and statements of account from several San Antonio businesses, dating from the 1890s and the 1900s. A ledger apparently documenting family business transactions from 1877 to 1882 is also included. |

Series 2: Organizations |
|
The majority of the material from this series is related to the involvement of Sarah Eagar and Florence Eagar Roberts in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT). Much of this material is related to the Alamo, documenting the controversy over custody of the site, which erupted shortly after a portion of the property was purchased by Clara Driscoll. Correspondence includes official and semi-official letters, primarily written by DRT members aligned with the faction that eventually assumed control of the Alamo, commenting on the issue. The remainder of the correspondence deals with the day-to-day operations of the Alamo, under the custodianship of Mrs. Eagar and her daughter, and covers repairs to the property, requests for souvenirs and information, and finances. |
|
Much of the remainder of the DRT material is related to these same subjects. Included are printed by-laws, position statements, and proceedings which refer to the custody controversy. Financial documents include accounts with local businesses for souvenirs, postcards, and supplies; records of sales at the Alamo; a detailed financial statement for the years 1903-1906; and inventories of merchandise at the Alamo for the years 1903 to 1914. Newspaper clippings covering the Alamo in general and the custody issue in particular are grouped with the Personal Papers series. |

Series 3: Military |
|
The third subgroup consists of military material, most of it pertaining to Col. Harris L. Roberts. Letters received by Roberts include official communications regarding his assignment in the Philippines at the turn of the century. Other letters document a recommendation that Roberts retire rather than assume a command and his opposition to retirement. A few items that refer to debate over Roberts' suitability for command are included in reports and legal documents, some of the items consisting of hand-written copies. A number of military manuals, books, and notes are part of the papers, some belonging to Col. Roberts, with later items belonging to his son, Robert Pierpont Roberts and his military service during World War II. |
