The COVID-19 Files: Austin Responds to a Pandemic:

An Inventory of the Collection

Collection Summary

Collector: Austin History Center
Title: The COVID-19 Files: Austin Responds to a Pandemic
Dates: 2020-2021
Abstract: In March of 2020, to ensure that stories from the COVID-19 era were preserved, the Austin History Center began an initiative to collect materials from the public documenting life in Austin during the pandemic. AHC collected items through a digital submission form, though physical items were also added to the collection when AHC reopened following the strictest part of the City's pandemic shutdown. The call for submissions resulted in over 5,000 items collected from hundreds of donors, each giving a unique perspective of life in Austin during COVID-19. The COVID-19 Files includes records of local businesses responding to the crisis, new visual art, original written works, compiled public health information and statistics, social media posts, and extensive photographs and moving images, all documenting Austin's response to the pandemic.

Scope and Contents

The COVID-19 Files contains primarily digital files that document Austin's response to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021, including business records, photography and moving images, public health information and statistics, social media posts, visual art, and original written works.

Business Records (2020-2021) consists of digital photographs, videos, menus, social media posts, signs and flyers, and various documents that provide insight into how business handled closures during quarantine, adapted business operations to continue to serve customers, protected staff during the pandemic, communicated new operations to customers, and mounted chartiable giving campaigns using business resources and supplies to help the Austin community survive the pandemic. Highlights of this series include photographs of empty grocery store shelves when there were runs on essential supplies as news of the pandemic spread, images and documentation of charitable giving efforts by Tso Chinese Delivery and Easy Tiger Bake Shop, and photographs of vendors at the Texas Farmers' Market.

Photography and Moving Images (2020-2021) contains digital photographs and video files that include aerial photographs of COVID-19 testing lines and empty Austin streets, interstates, and parks; video diaries; scenes from home life including children in virtual classrooms, Zoom happy hours and celebrations, pandemic yard art, home offices, and baking and garden projects to stay occupied at home; various manifestations of community including neighborhood interations, dance performances, bike rides, and a civic fundraiser for the AAPI community; portraits of healthcare workers and other essential workers as well as other Austinites wearing masks inside and outside of the homes; protests and demonstrations that took place in the spring and summer of 2020; photos of the vast and varied street art that was painted on fences, buildings, and, primarily, on the boards covering storefronts in downtown Austin; and street scenes of boarded-up businesses, empty streets, closed parks, masked pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and socially distanced lines. Included in this grouping are also the protest signs created for a demonstration at Austin Independent School District headquarters in response to reopening during the pandemic. The protest signs were rescued from a dumpster and donated to the collection along with digital photos and videos of the demonstration in September 2020. Highlights of this series include photographs of street scenes during the pandemic from professional photographers Camille Wheeler and Jay Janner, as well as, amateur photography and video (in the Home and Community sub-series) by Austin residents capturing a more personal look at pandemic life, including images of Shane Reilly's flag memorial: Reilly began sticking flags in his front yard in May 2020 to honor each Texan lost to the virus. He started the project as a way to encourage his neighbors to pay attention to the seriousness of the pandemic. The installation eventually became an impromptu memorial — and people began traveling from around the city to see it up close. Many flags contain handwritten notes from loved ones of the deceased. Reilly left a sharpie out in his yard so people could write messages.

Public Health (2020-2021) materials document public health information and statistics created and disseminated during the pandemic by Austin Public Health and the Mindsight Institute as well as data visualizations compiled on Reddit. The statistical data regarding COVID-19 cases and deaths compiled on Reddit is extensive and includes screen captures of comments from the Reddit community. Over 900 screen captures are part of this collection.

Social Media (2020-2021) consists of social media content created in response to the pandemic including creative series, blogs, memes, and daily posts by individual users. Highlights of this series include Reshmi Chowdhury's documentation of the Celebration of Love fundraiser which consists of project files, video, and photographs documenting the Asian American fundraiser event "Celebration of Love: A Civic Fundraiser for COVID-19." The event was performed online on May 2. The musical performances in the concert featured six locally and internationally known South Asian-American vocalists and musicians - Babna Karim, Raka Bhaduri, Argha Guha, Chandan Zaman Ali, Pooja Paul Choudhury, Shubhro Banerjee, Reshmi Chowdhury. In this difficult time, the concert aimed to give a soothing musical experience, while raising funds for low income Asian Americans in Central Texas as well as the underprivileged people in Bangladesh. Reshmi Chowdhury organized and hosted the fundraiser, which was acknowledged by the Asian American Quality of Life (AAQoL) Commission and is being archived by the Austin History Center. Another highlight are the record of daily selfies posted on Instragram by Amalia Rodriguez-Mendoza which include captions that document what was going on locally and in her personal life in 2020-2021, in addition to blogs and video diaries by published author Dale Bridges which include the series "Diary of a Retail Worker" and "Unmasking the Virus: A Retail Diary of the Plague Years."

Visual Art (2020-2021) contains digital representations of original works of art produced as a creative response to COVID-19 and include collage art, paintings, sketches, digital illustrations, murals, posters, exhibits, color drawings, and street art. Highlights of the series include images of original paintings by Chelsea Amato, drawings by Megan Hildrebrandt and Anna Chen, and drawings by children reacting to the pandemic.

Written Works (2020-2021) includes correspondence, diaries, essays, newsletters, planning documents, poetry, sermons, songs, transcripts, and zines documenting the experience of living through COVID-19. Highlights of this series include The Austin Texas Youth Zine (ATXyz) which was a project of Austin Public Library Summer Teen Volunteers during June and July of 2020. The Teen Editors decided quickly that they wanted to submit their work to the Austin History Center's COVID-19 files, and made that a central part of their first issue of the newly-formed "ATX Youth Zine" or "ATXyz." The project aimed to reach teens from Central Texas to encourage them to submit their work to the zine from their time in Quarantine. Another hightlight are the many personal diary entries and written essays submitted by Austin residents capturing personal trauma and moments of joy during the pandemic. Hindu Charities for America published "Life During the COVID-19 Pandemic Through the Eyes of Children" which contains a compilation of essays that were part of a contest organized by HC4A to provide an opportunity for kids to share their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic time. Given the overwhelming response and creativity of children.

Abstract: Born-digital media documenting the business operations of Tso Chinese Delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic in Austin, Texas. "When COVID-19 lockdowns began to domino across the globe last year, the co-founders of local restaurant Tso Chinese Delivery — Min Choe, Jenna Choe, Eunice Tsang, and Angell Tsang — immediately looked for some way to help fellow Austinites. Many locals were suddenly out of jobs as non-essential businesses were forced to temporarily close to mitigating the spread of the virus. The three decided that the easiest way that their to-go and delivery-only restaurants could help was by offering free meals to un- or underemployed people. “We wanted to feed a few folks,” says Min Choe, an Austin native, and a long-time entrepreneur whose restaurants are located in Cherrywood and the Arboretum. With that simple directive, the couples launched charitable branch Tso Giving in March 2020, and began their path to supplying Austinites hardest hit with more than $220,000 worth of meals — equivalent to 22,000 portions. As part of the then-newly-formed Tso Giving in March 2020, the co-founders envisioned helping out the Austin service industry. They developed a donation infrastructure to offset the costs of food and production while paying their staff for their work through a combination of Venmo, GoFundMe, and Tso’s official website. From there, the Austin community pitched in: donations from individuals and from other local companies to contribute to the fund. Initially, Tso Giving’s goal was small: They wanted to hand out just a few hundred meals. The restaurant put out a call for email and phone call submissions from people who felt they needed meals from the restaurant. Co-founder Eunice Tsang sorted through those requests to determine who would receive what, which were then delivered by the staff. Once the number of requests became too large to manage, Tso set up a curbside pickup tent at its Arbor location instead, so that those people could just come and pick up food at designated times. Those springtime drive-thrus were initially run by the Choes and Tsangs. But, pretty soon much of the Tso staff were volunteering their time between shifts to the cause." - From the article 'Tso Chinese Delivery’s takeout operation grew a small token of kindness into an operation that fed thousands' by Nina Hernandez, Austin Eater, 2021

From Jennifer "From being each other’s “one that got away,” to long distance dating, to moving to TX from two states, to now- the pandemic... nothing could keep us from marrying each other! It was stressful and emotional after every CDC announcement on gathering restrictions. When for months our wheels had been on wedding-planning-mode, it’s hard to step back and have a reality check that there’s a pandemic happening. Thank goodness for the magical and positive attitudes of our family and friends! We are so grateful that we’re safe, will still be able to have the wedding we had been planning later in the year (hopefully), and can laugh about how we had a wedding during the pandemic of 2020! It was such an honor to be married by my Dad in my parents living room (gorgeously decorated by my Mom) and had our immediate family watching Live through Facebook. Toasts were made via FaceTime and our amazing photographer @addisonstudios captured all the intimate DIY details! It’s not what we had originally planned, but we’re so happy that we can now call each other husband and wife! Thank you for this opportunity to share our Pandemic story! Love, Jennifer and Kevin Gilligan"

Project Description: "These images represent the beauty and strangeness we currently see in the world. As Easter falls upon us, the life cycle of spring presses on while be band together in isolation to prevent unnecessary loss of life. We make masks. We wash our hands relentlessly. We go outside once a day but avoid contact with anyone outside our isolation pods. We try to find the beauty in everyday that passes during this strange time. All images were made by me, the photographer, Matt Munson, while also wearing a mask and never getting closer to the subjects than 10 feet."

AR-2020-014\Photography-and-Moving-images\Home-and-Community\Reilly_Shane Reilly, Shane, 2020
.603GB (126 files); (JPEG); (MP4) born-digital

Abstract: Shane Reilly, an Austin-based artist, began sticking flags in his front yard in May 2020 to honor each Texan lost to the virus. He says some people have also shown up with their own flags. By December of 2020, Texas had lost more than 24,000 people to COVID-19, second only to New York, where more than 35,000 have died. Reilly's planted more than 20,000 flags so far. He’s still going, trying to keep up. A hand-painted sign above the flags notes how many Texans have been lost to the disease. After March of 2021, Reilly took down the memorial flags, sending some to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and donating others to the Austin History Center for long term preservation so that we can remember the pandemic and the many lives lost.

Abstract: Video donated by Cindy Verheyden as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Round Rock New Neighbors is excited to submit a slideshow review of the year 2020 at RRNN. Our social club of mostly retired ladies from Round Rock and surround communities is a vibrant organization that offers many activities including a monthly luncheon [September through May], large coffee gatherings and a number of interest groups offering games and other activities. The organization was established in 1978. While the year 2020 started out just like any year does, our club – like the rest of our world – had to adapt to a serious situation [COVID-19] that suddenly halted all our plans and activities beginning in March, after our regular luncheon. The slideshow submitted, Auld Lang Syne, shows how our organization and its sub-groups found ways to continue our social connections and maintain our distance. Smaller gatherings, outdoor activities and video meetings became the “new normal”. We had to wear masks rather than name tags. And we had to check on each other to make sure everyone was doing all right. Our weekly news digest became our lifeline, providing reports on members’ health, messages from our president, updates telling how we continued to provide support to our communities, and photos of our activities from 2019 – reminders of the fun we “used to have”. Auld Lang Syne was included in the last news digest as a review of 2020 and all the sacrifices the year demanded."

Abstract: The Austin Texas Youth Zine (ATXyz) was a project of Austin Public Library Summer Teen Volunteers during June and July of 2020. The Teen Editors decided quickly that they wanted to submit their work to the Austin History Center's COVID-19 files, and made that a central part of their first issue of the newly-formed "ATX Youth Zine" or "ATXyz." The project aimed to reach teens from Central Texas to encourage them to submit their work to the zine from their time in Quarantine, with the knowledge that their submissions would be shared with the Austin History Center. The PDF eZine is the culmination of their summer's work: a snapshot of a summer of youth during COVID-19, quarantine, and a period of social unrest. Teen Editors and APL Volunteers: Nora Boumaraf, Samya Chauchan,Justin Gao, Siyona Jain, Maya Kini, Estella Zhao. Coordinating APL Staff: Kathleen Houlihan, Librarian III; Alanna Graves, Librarian II; Heath Rezabek, Managing Librarian.
