Administrative History

Saheli, now known as Asian Family Support Services of Austin, started on February 23, 1992 as a grassroots all-volunteer network of South Asian women committed to assisting Asian families impacted by domestic violence. The informal support group established a confidential hotline in 1993 and became a tax-exempt non-profit organization in 1994. Saheli was the only organization of its kind in the South, offering services such as culture-sensitive peer counseling, referrals, legal advocacy, crisis assistance, outreach through education, translation and interpretation, accompaniment to courthouse and law offices, and life skills training. Outreach efforts included regular newsletters, seminars, book readings, speeches, performing art events, and information booths.

Saheli cultivated partnerships of support not only with local organizations such as SafePlace Austin (formerly Center for Battered Women) but between other Asian-centered anti-domestic violence organizations such as Daya (Houston), SAWERA (Oregon), Manavi (New Jersey), and other South Asian communities abroad. In 2004, Saheli received funding for two paid staff members, ultimately shifting the operations of the organization while expanding the reach of its services and resources. Today, Asian Family Support Services of Austin (AFSSA) has a bilingual and bicultural staff who provides services in 30 different languages in Travis, Williamson, Hays, Caldwell, and Bastrop counties. AFSSA continues the original vision of Saheli through the promotion of abuse-free Asian communities through advocacy, support, awareness and access to social services.

Scope and Contents

The Saheli Records document the organization’s early formation, membership, activities, challenges and successes as one of the first all-volunteer support groups in the country serving Asian communities affected by domestic violence. While the bulk of the material is from 1992 to 2004, 7 oral history digital audio files (.wav) from 2018-2019 provide first-person narratives of early members of Saheli. The collection’s bylaws and incorporation documents, meeting minutes, financial records, correspondence, and other administrative records provide a detailed account of how Saheli slowly built capacity as a strong voice of support within Austin’s Asian families. Marketing material and photographs capture Saheli’s community organizing efforts through family workshops, film screenings, potlucks, performances, and other gatherings such as the Walk for Safe Families fundraiser. This includes 7 Bollywood Bash flyers (.jpg, .pdf) and 368 digital photographs (.jpg) dated from 2004 to 2014. The material found within the collection illustrates a strong Asian community working in solidarity for anti-violence, anti-racist, LGBTQ, immigrant, and other causes locally, nationally and abroad.

Also included are video recordings of two educational plays, “Daughters and Dates” and “Meye Dile Sajiye” (To Give a Daughter Away), written, produced and performed by Saheli members for the Austin community. The 2 digitized video files (.mp4) for the videocassettes in this collection are available for viewing on the digital workstation in the Austin History Center reading room.
