Administrative History

Mayfield Park/Community Project

Mayfield Park/Community Project is a volunteer group that organized in 1986 with the goal of restoring and improving Mayfield Park, a 23 acre estate at 3505 West 35th Street in West Austin that includes a historic cottage, gardens, and nature preserve. Funds have been raised through grants, foundations, and individuals since the 1980s, and have gone toward the creation of a master plan and ongoing restoration and landscaping projects. The master plan was commissioned in 1986 and developed by Gregory Free.

Mayfield Park/Community Project is sponsored by Friends of the Parks of Austin, a non-profit corporation, and is under the supervision of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. Karen Cannatti and Mary C. Kaiser served as co-chairs of Mayfield Park/Community Project for many years.

Mayfield Park

Allison Mayfield, who purchased the cottage in 1909 at what is now Mayfield Park, was Chairman of the Railroad Commission and served as Texas Secretary of State. His daughter, Mary Frances Mayfield, married Milton Gutsch in 1918. Gutsch was Chairman of the History Department as the University of Texas at Austin. In 1922, Mary Frances and Milton Gutsch moved into the cottage and added porches to three sides of the house. Mary Frances also designed the gardens and Milton built stone walls, ponds, and garden features with the help of the resident gardener, Steve Arredondo. Peacocks were given to the couple as gifts in 1935, and the descendants of the peafowl are still at the park. The Mayfield-Gutsch family developed the site over 62 years. Milton Gutsch died in 1967, and Mary Mayfield Gutsch died in 1971, granting the home and acreage to the City of Austin for use as a public park. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1994.

Scope and Contents

The materials were collected and created by the two co-chairs of the organization, Karen Cannatti and Mary C. Kaiser. The first series of materials was created by Karen Cannatti and dates largely from 1986-2018 but also includes a photograph of Mary Frances Mayfield that dates to around 1890. Her records are arranged into general files, gardening symposiums, grants and funding, photographs, and press. The general files consist of early correspondence and planning documents dating from 1886-1990, as well as awards from 1989 and 1997; a calendar containing a reproduction of a painting of the Mayfield-Gutsch cottage; information about the closing of the Natural Science Guild of Austin; Mayfield Park visitor sign-in data from 1993-2016; correspondence and interview transcripts of Lupe Santos and Olga Moerbe; and architectural drawings designed by Gregory Free & Associates in 1987.

The material given by Lupe Santos documents his parents, Faustino and Nora Santos, who lived and worked at the Mayfield-Gutsch residence in the 1930s. Faustino built the rock ponds and surrounding rock terraces during his years working with the Gutsches. Nora cooked for the Gutsches. Photographs taken of Nora Santos at age 88 on a visit to the park in 2004 are included. There is also material consisting of a letter, photograph, and interview notes, documenting Olga Moerbe, who worked as a live-in housekeeper and companion to Mary Mayfield Gutsch from 1924-1928.

Fliers and videos document the gardening symposiums from 1996-2018. The materials documenting funding and grants largely consists of grant applications and correspondence from 1987-2015. Of note is an account ledger documenting donations from 1987-1995. Photographs consist of the circa 1890 photograph of Mary Frances Mayfield as well as two digitized images, one of Mary Frances (same as print copy) and one of Allison Mayfield, both digitized in 2009. The press materials date from 1987-2018 consist of brochures, press packets, clippings, and promotional videos.

The materials created by Mary C. Kaiser date from 1986-2003 and consist of general files, financial materials, gardening symposium materials, press, and restoration plans. General history, correspondence, presentation materials, notes, and video release forms make up the general files. The bulk of her materials is financial, including general budget sheets, Capital Improvements Program (C.I.P.) documents from 1998, rental information for the cottage, fundraising events, and grants. Flyers for the gardening symposiums date from 1995-1997. Clippings and publicity date from 1986-1989 and 1992-1999. The restoration plans include the initial master plan proposal and a draft of the 1987 master plan by Gregory Free.
