Biographical Sketch

Mocha Jean Herrup is a filmmaker, scholar and teacher. Between the years of 1991 and 2018 they were based in Austin, Texas. It was in Austin, and while attending the University of Texas, Austin perusing a graduate degree in Radio-Television-Film (2001 – 2003), that Herrup created the majority of the video content in this collection. Herrup was also involved with the Kings N Things drag king performance troupe and taped several of that organization’s events and other drag king performances. As a filmmaker, Herrup has received audience awards from South by Southwest film festival (2004, A Few Good Dykes), Inside/Out film festival (1999, POM) and Cinematexas (1998, POM).

Scope and Contents

Video tapes make up the majority of the content of this collection. These recordings consist of live music performances, many of which were recorded at former Austin café Gaby & Mo’s between the years 2000 – 2004. Another large part of the video collection consists of drag king performances, including Kings N Things and the 2006 International Drag King Extravaganza (IDK8) which took place in Austin. There are also audio recordings (DAT) of the IDK8 event. Other video tapes include recordings of performance art and other events. Many of the posters, flyers and post cards in this collection are for the events recorded on video tape.

The text materials in this collection relate to the King’s N Things organization and consist of the minutes of meetings in 2002 – 2004 (not continuous) and the organization’s by laws created in 2004.
