Administrative History

Founded in 1989, House the Homeless, Inc. (HTH) is the oldest all volunteer, action, homeless organization in the state of Texas. The mission is education and advocacy around the issues of ending and preventing homelessness. The original website was launched in the early 1990s. In addition to creating a Memorial in 1992, House the Homeless conducts annual city-wide memorial services where it has placed two commemorative plaques, a bench, and a Tree of Remembrance to the men, women and children who have lived and died on the streets of Austin. The organization has been awarded repeatedly for the creation of numerous work and social service programs, and a monthly blog and newsletter that keep the focus on the economic issues of workers falling out of the work force and into homelessness. House The Homeless considers all homeless and formerly homeless individuals to be members of this 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit corporation.

Scope and Contents

The House the Homeless Video Collection primarily consists of videos on VHS tapes and DVDs that document the annual memorial services conducted by HTH in addition to issues experienced by the homeless population in Austin, Texas during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Supplementary materials include memorial programs from 1992-2018, social services resource guides published by HTH, and reports. A report of note, the Universal Living Wage plan, written by Richard R. Troxell, designed a three-pronged formula using existing government guidelines that would turn the Federal Minimum Wage (FMW) into a Universal Living Wage (ULW). The ULW indexes the FMW to the local cost of housing throughout the entire United States and it ensures that anyone working 40 hours in a week (be it through one job or three) will be able to afford basic food, clothing, shelter, utilities and medical care.
