Biographical SketchKhushATX (formerly KhushAustin) first gathered in the Steeping Room at the Domain center in Austin, Texas in March 2012. KhushATX is an active South Asian gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender group based in Austin, Texas. As Desis, the KhushATX community has unique challenges as they navigate their lives in the United States influenced by their sexual orientation, gender, immigration status, ethnic identity, and culture. The main purpose of this group is to create a space for South Asian LGBTQ persons to meet, mingle, interact, commiserate, support each other, and, of course, have fun! KhushATX wishes to increase acceptance and reduce stigma of LGBTQ people within the local South Asian communities by increasing awareness while adding to the diversity of the queer community in the Austin area. The organization has grown to a network of over 100 individuals and has programmed events such as Bollywood dances, Eid dinners, monthly GupShup discussion circles, and participation in Austin’s citywide Pride parade.
