An Inventory of the Collection
Austin Taiwanese Association (ATA) is a non-profit organization that serves the Taiwanese American community in the Austin, Texas metropolitan region. Mu-Sheng Wu and other graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin founded ATA in 1970. Initial membership was approximately 40 and UT-Austin economics Professor Paul Yu become the organization’s first Taiwanese American adviser in 1974. ATA became a separate entity from the UT Taiwanese Student Association in 1981 to serve the wider Austin community. ATA members are active political organizers and continue to support current Taiwanese-Americans through information sharing and neighborly assistance. The organization also celebrates Taiwanese culture and heritage through periodic get-togethers each year such as Lunar New Year, Moon Festival, “Ba-Tsang” Festival, community projects, and more. Provided by the Austin Taiwanese Association and Peter Wu.
The Austin Taiwanese Association (ATA) Records document the organization’s political and social activities of the Austin Taiwanese community from 1970 to 2013, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1970 to 2004. The collection contains writings and clippings that identify key founding members and outline the early formation of ATA. This includes the organization’s political activism against the human rights violations conducted by the Taiwanese government and supporting political prisoners seeking asylum from Taiwan. Color photographs, meeting minutes, financial records, video cassettes (VHS), and other administrative documents highlight major ATA social-cultural programs such Lunar New Year celebrations, Mother’s Day concerts, Taiwanese softball and tennis tournaments, the Austin Taiwanese Language School and subsequent Taiwanese Speech Contest.
