Biographical SketchDaniel and Hedvig Lundquist Heard first immigrated to Texas in 1848. Their son J.W. Heard was born in September 1851. In 1852, the family moved to the city of Austin and in 1858, returned to Sweden where they lived until 1867 when they immigrated again to Texas. They ended up settling in Williamson County. On this second trip to America, Daniel Heard served as an interpreter for around 100 Swedish immigrants. Many of the Swedish immigrants worked as farmers, including Daniel Heard. Daniel and Hedvig had another son, Swen A. Heard, born in Texas in 1879. Source Scott, Larry E. The Swedish Texans. San Antonio: University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures, 1990. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThis small collection documents the Heard family through correspondence, legal documents, financial documents, photographs, and diaries. The early correspondence dates from the 1860s-1880s and is primarily written in Swedish. There are also tax collector forms for Heard's property in Williamson County, and Daniel Heard's Certificate of Naturalisation from 1857 in Travis County. Correspondence to Will Heard (possibly J.W. Heard) dates from the 1920s. The diaries belonging to Daniel Heard date from 1858-1870, and are primarily written in Swedish. Additionally, there are two unidentified and undated studio portraits of a man and woman, possibly Daniel and Hedvig Heard.
