Biographical Sketch

Thurlow B. Weed was born to Valentine Osborne and Bella Weed in 1881 in Austin, Texas. V. O. Weed owned and operated a funeral home and livery stable on Congress Avenue. In 1907, Thurlow B. Weed and Agnes Aden were married in Austin. Agnes was born in Paris, Tennessee in 1883, and her family moved to Austin shortly after. Eunice Aden, sister to Agnes, graduated from University of Texas in 1896 and was later made director of physical training for women at University of Texas. She also operated a camp for girls at Medina Lake. Clarence M. Aden, their brother, was a dentist who had an office in Austin on Congress Avenue.

The Thurlow Weed Funeral Home, located at 1603 Lavaca Street, opened on July 1, 1921. Thurlow B. Weed had attended the American School of Embalming in St. Louis and the Renaud School of Embalming in New York City. His funeral home was lauded as the first of its kind in Austin. In 1942, Weed formed a partnership with Jack Corley, and the name was changed to Weed-Corley Funeral Home. They later moved from Lavaca Street to 3125 Lamar Boulevard in 1957.

Thurlow and Agnes had one son, Thurlow “Bobby” Weed, Jr., born in 1908. Thurlow B. Weed and his family were active in the Austin Lions Clubs, Chamber of Commerce, various Masonic bodies, and Girl Scouts of Austin. He died in 1973.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence, certificates, legal documents, writings, photographs, and artifacts that document the Weed and Aden families' businesses and social interests. Of note are school report cards of Thurlow B. Weed's from 1897-1899, an undated camp scrapbook documenting Eunice Aden's camp at Medina Lake, and correspondence and invitations to the Weed family dating mainly from the 1920s and 1930s. A letter of interest is from local architect Hugo Kuehne dated December 14, 1934, thanking Weed for sending around a 1902 list of a military company to the original members. Certificates of Masonic societies given to Thurlow B. Weed and his brother-in-law Clarence M. Aden date from 1905 and the early 1920s. Also in the collection are certificates and diplomas given to Clarence M. Aden in dentistry school. Other materials documenting clubs and associations include correspondence dating from the 1920s to 1960s from the Lions Club, Young Men's Business League, Austin Girl Scout Association, Scottish Rite, and Austin Rifles. There are also meeting minutes from the Austin Girl Scout Association and club administration materials for the Austin Lions Club.

A few marketing materials, including cards and paper fans branded for the Thurlow Weed Funeral Home as well as a stamp of the building possibly used for letterheads documents Weed's funeral business. Legal documents include the 1908 will of John Dunlap Aden, Agnes Aden Weed's father; a 1952 will of Elizabeth Conway Lewis, a relative of the Aden's; and a 1962 petition for appointment of conservator for Stella Conway.

Weed and Rosengren Liverymen and Undertakers is documented through a list of payments for the raffle of a black racing pony as well as business cards. Writings and speeches consist of a speech given by Thurlow Weed concerning Colonel Robert G. Ingersoll, and some writing on the subject of temperance.

The bulk of the collection consists of black-and-white photographs documenting an array of subject matter, including bikes, cars, trains, and motorcycles; the camp at Medina Lake; candid and studio portraits; houses and buildings; outdoor scenes; water activities and scenes; and military activities (including an Armistice Day parade). Most of the photos date from the 1910s and 1920s. A small set of photographs documents the Austin Lions Club 50th anniversary at Villa Capri in 1966. Of note are a series of pictures of a car being pulled from a river (circa 1920), and photos of a house at 500 San Antonio Street. Formats include cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite. Local photographers: W.J. Oliphant, S.B. Hill, Journeay, H. R. Marks, Emil Risse, Boone, H.B. Hillyer, Jensen. Additionaly, a photograph album dating from 1900 contains 73 photographs of portraits and candid shots of family and friends; family houses; travel scenes in Colorado and Utah; and Wilbur Ranch.
