Administrative History

MIGHT (Mobility Impaired Grappling Hurdles Together) was initially founded as a student organization in 1971 at University of Texas at Austin. In 1973, the MIGHT II chapter was organized in the Austin/Travis County area. The organization was established in order to help eliminate social and environmental barriers facing people with disabilities. The activities included:

  • Promoting the elimination of architectural barriers, including advocating for public awareness and new laws
  • Monitoring education for people with disabilities, especially supporting the federal law on education of children with disabilities and its implementation on state and local levels
  • Advocating for special transit services for mobility impaired persons
  • Promoting awareness of housing needs, including loans and assistance in buying, remodeling for barrier removal, availability of accessible houses and apartments, and congregate housing for semi-independent living

The organization was funded by members and because it did not receive state or federal funds, was able to lobby government legislation without jeopardizing funding.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of bylaws, brochures, and legal documents. The organization's bylaws and articles of incorporation date from 1972 and 1981. A majority of the materials in the collection document the 1975 civil lawsuit filed by MIGHT against the federal, state, county and city governmental units in failing to provide accessible public transportation for the physically handicapped. The lawsuit was settled in August 1977 when the federal government approved funding and the City of Austin agreed to purchase "with all deliberate speed" five 26-passenger buses equipped with lifts for wheelchair accessibility. A chronology of the legal proceedings from March 3, 1975 to August 25, 1977 is included in the collection as well as a color photograph of Charles Ekredge, Jr. receiving an award for MIGHT from Senator Lloyd Doggett. Drawings and surveys for architectural barrier removal projects and training materials for disability awareness are also part of the collection.
