Administrative History

The Austin Networker was established in 1979, an idea of the Austin Commission on the Status of Women. Nadea Gizelbach, chair of the Austin Women's Network in 1980, spearheaded the publishing of the first issue in July 1980 with editors Anne Gault-Burton, Beverly Scarborough, and Dee Van Antwerp. Jan Triplett, who started out as "editor", later to become "editor-in-chief", also played a leading role in the production of the newsletter. Staffed by volunteers, the purpose of The Austin Networker was to showcase women's achievements, provide relevant information for women, and to support writers, photographers, artists, and poets by furnishing a quality journalistic outlet for their talents. Still, articles written by men were always welcome. In 1982, The Austin Networker became independent from the Austin Commission on the Status of Women. Funded by subscriptions, and later advertising, the magazine had a circulation of 7,000, primarily in the Austin area. Publication ceased in August 1987.
