Abstract: Nels Jacobson, also known as "Jagmo," moved to Austin, Texas in the late 1970's where he founded Jagmo Studios, a design firm specializing in graphic arts for the entertainment industry. The collection contains approximately thirty-seven music posters as well as assortment of publicity for Jacobson's work, articles about poster art written by Jacobson, various pamphlets and handbills dating from the 1980s and early 1990s.

Biographical Note

Nels Jacobson, also known as "Jagmo," moved to Austin, Texas in the late 1970s and served as promotional manager at Club Foot, an Austin concert hall featuring local bands and touring acts such as U2, REM, BB King, and King Sunny Ade. After leaving Club Foot in 1983, Nels founded Jagmo Studios, a design firm specializing in graphic art for the entertainment industry. From 1987 through 1992 he served as the SXSW art director. He is a founding board member of the American Poster Institute and South Austin Popular Culture Center and serves on the board of The Rock Poster Society. In addition to his graphic design work Jacobson is a practicing attorney specializing is the areas of trademark, copyright and entertainment law.

Scope and Contents

The majority of the collection are posters that advertise music shows at Austin venues such as Liberty Lunch, The Ritz, Fast & Cool Club, the Coliseum, the Opera House, Huts, La Zona Rosa, Auditorium Shores, Cannibal Club, Paramount Theater, and Beach Cabaret. There are also music calendars for Club Foot, 6th Street Live, and Hut’s. The posters promote bands and musicians such as the Pixies, Pere Ubu, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Roky Erickson, Steel Pulse, Marshall Crenshaw, Joe “King” Carrasco, Suzanne Vega, The Cramps, The Church, King Sunny Ade, Smithereens, Lords of the New Church, Jesse Colin Young, Junior Walker & the All Stars, Soul Hat, Big Car, Sinead O’Connor, The The, Tex Thomas & the Danglin’ Wranglers, Deee-Lite, Bootsy Collins, Smithereens, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Charlie Daniels Band, Ziggy Marley, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, Mason Ruffner, Joe Ely, Iggy Pop, and kd lang.
