Administrative History

Kealing Junior High School was dedicated on February 12th, 1930 as Austin, Texas' first junior high school for African American students and was named after Hightower Theodore Kealing, an African American educator and writer. Originally located at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Leona street, the school moved into the renovated building that once housed Anderson High School on Pennsylvania and Comal Street, a half block away in February of 1954. Kealing educated students under the leadership of Principal T.C. Calhoun for over 40 years before being shut down in 1971 as part of desegregation efforts. The school was converted to offices but suffered damage due to a firebomb attack in 1973. It was eventually converted into a warehouse, and burned down due to arson in 1984. In 1987, Austin Independent School District re-opened Kealing on the same site as a magnet middle school.

Scope and Contents

The Kealing Junior High School Papers largely date from 1961 to 1971, the last decade the original school was open and contain memorandums, fliers, administrative documents, and meeting notes related to the day to day operations of the school as well as the participation of parents and students.
