Detailed Description of the Collection
University of Texas School of Architecture Measured Drawings
An Inventory of the Collection
Blake Alexander, professor of architecture at the The University of Texas School of Architecture, adapted the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) format for his architecture history class at UT, requiring students to measure and draw historic Texas buildings as one of his assignments starting in the 1950s. During the 1970s this practice of producing comprehensive documentation of historic buildings continued under the guidance of Professor Wayne Bell at the Winedale Institute in Historic Preservation. The creation of measured drawings of historic buildings continues to be part of the coursework at the UT School of Architecture.
While the majority of the measured drawings created by University of Texas School of Architecture students are archived at The University of Texas Alexander Architectural Archives the Austin History houses some of the drawings documenting historic structures in Austin, Texas. The artificial collection spans the dates 1957 to 1978, as well as a single drawing from 2014. Represented in the collection are the Travis County Courthouse (1019 Congress Avenue), Old Post Office and Federal Building/O. Henry Hall (601 Colorado Streets); Butler residence (309 W. 11th Street); Cater Joseph residence (1610 Virginia Avenue), Gethsemane Lutheran Church (1510 Congress Streets), Neill-Cochran House (2310 San Gabriel Street), Hirschfeld Honeymoon Cottage (305 W. 9th Street), Spence residence, Robinson-Bremond residence (404 W. 7th Street), "A Victorian Residence" (1012 E. 8th Street), Zilker Park Clubhouse (200 Zilker Clubhouse Road) and the BAPS Swaninarayan Temple (12246 Running Bird Lane).
