Odell and Jeanne Grant Photograph Album
An Inventory to the Collection
Odell and Jeanne Grant are Austin residents who were affected by the Memorial Day floods of 1981. Living at 4003 Petes Path, their property was near Shoal Creek and their home suffered severe damage due to the floodwaters. The storm caused $90,000 worth of damage to their home. Odell and Jeanne had a woodworking craft business, but this was abandoned when Odell broke his back in 1999 in an accident and Jeanne was diagnosed with pulmonary embolisms. Odell's back healed and Jeanne survived due to experimental surgery. Then a chance encounter with someone in the movie business started a new career for Odell as a model and film extra. He subsequently appeared in such films as Tree of Life and Whip It! and TV shows such as Friday Night Lights, as well as commercials and music videos.
One photo album containing 194 photographs documents the aftermath of the flooding of Shoal Creek on May 25 (Memorial Day), 1981. The snapshots, taken by Odell and Jeanne Grant, depict damage to their house and neighborhood. Exterior views show uprooted trees, damaged cars, and damaged houses. Interior views depict the Grant's home before the flood in March 1981, after the flood with mud and destruction throughout, and the start of the cleaning and rebuilding process after the damage. A few photos show a neighborhood association meeting in June 1981, neighbors gathering informally, and signs to warn against looters. Two black and white photographs at the end of the album are from the Austin Citizen newspaper. Included with the album are several clippings from local newspapers about the flooding. There is also a headshot of Odell Grant and personal informational documents from 2006-2009 related to his acting and modelling career.
