John W. Ezelle ScrapbookAn Inventory of the Collection
Biographical NoteJohn W. Ezelle was born on February 19, 1880 in Trenton, Tennessee. After his first experience with a telephone in 1896 he became interested in the technology and went to work in a local telephone office. He moved to Texas in the early 1900s and married Texas native, Addie Justine Castleton in 1908. The couple had one son, John William Ezelle, Jr. in 1909. After working for Southwestern Bell Telephone company in a variety of Texas towns including San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Bellville, Sealy, Lockhart and Cuero Ezelle was transferred to Austin and promoted to district manager.. Ezelle was responsible for making Austin the first Texas city to have the modern dial telephone system. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone company until his death on September 2, 1942 as the age of 62. Along with managing Southwestern Bell Telephone company Ezelle was involved in civic affairs. He was made president of the Austin Chamber of Commerce in 1932 and after serving as secretary of the Austin Rotary Club for twenty years he was made president in 1934 and district governor in 1939. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe scrapbook documents John W. Ezelle's career, civic involvement and family life from 1908 until his death in 1942. Newspaper clippings highlight accomplishments at Southwestern Bell Telephone company and election to offices of various civic organizations. Photographs include the family at home and at Camp Val-Hallah, as well as Ezelle at work with office employees. Loose materials found in the pages of the scrapbooks consists of Ezelle's funeral program, correspondence and cards.
