Administrative History

In 1975, the Chinese Professional Association of Texas was established with roughly 40-50 Chinese families residing in Austin. In 1980, the organization was renamed Austin Chinese Association. During the late 80’s through the early 90’s, the economic downturn affected many Chinese residents who worked in the high tech industry so the association lost much of their membership and had to cease operations.

By mid 1990's, the economy started to bounce back and the Chinese population grew once more with new jobs. In 1996, the Chinese Society of Austin (CSA) was founded in order to promote the social welfare and status of the Chinese in the Central Texas area. The organization hosts several events such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese New Year, and community health fairs. They also sponsor charities events for disaster relief and collaborate with other Asian organizations to build a stronger Chinese presence in the Greater Austin area.
