Administrative HistoryThe John B. Winn Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) was organized in 1907 as a local unit of the Texas branch of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. The objects of the PTA (according to the published by-laws in 1947) were to promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, church and community; to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth; to bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the training of the child; and to develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for every child the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education. The PTA supported the John B. Winn Elementary School and met every month during the school year. Winn Elementary School still has an active Parent-Teacher Association. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe meeting minute ledgers, yearbooks and Publicity Books in this collection highlight the activities of the John B. Winn Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) from 1923 to 1964. The two meeting minute books span the years 1923-1937 and 1937-1951 and include membership lists and the roll of those present in addition to the meeting minutes. Scattered years of the PTA yearbooks date from 1939 through 1962 and provide information about PTA programming, faculty names and names of the PTA office-holders. The twenty-one Publicity Books span the years 1938-1963 and appear to be created for submission to the Texas Congress of Parents-Teachers Association and were exhibited at State and/or District Annual Meetings. The scrapbook-style books include PTA yearbooks, newspaper clippings, pictures of PTA events, event flyers, financial information, and correspondence sent by the PTA to parents of Winn Elementary students. In addition there are set of photographs of students celebrating May Day dated from 1910 to 1912 and an undated photograph of the students in front of the school. Return to the Table of Contents
