An Inventory of the Collection
Boards and commissions are an established feature of Austin's municipal government and provide citizens an opportunity to participate in the City's governmental process and lend a more diverse viewpoint for the City Council to consider. They are created by the City Council as the need arises and dissolved if the need for the particular board or commission ends or if the purpose of the board/commission needs to be altered. As early as the 1920s there was a Chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee that regularly presented ideas and recommendations to City Council. In 1953 the City of Austin created their own Aviation Committee to "study the present and probable future needs of commercial and private aircraft for local aircraft facilities...."
Since then, various iterations of an aviation/airport board or commission have existed when the City Council has deemed it necessary. The Airport Advisory Board was created (Ordinance No. 841213-0) at a December 13, 1984 Austin City Council meeting when Councilmember Rose introduced the idea. The Board was intended to review and analyze policies relating to aviation activities and construction at Robert Mueller Municipal Airport and any future airports developed by the City of Austin, and to make recommendations to the City Council on such matters.
A new ordinance (001109-45) was passed in November of 2000 to take effect on January 15, 2001, that created the Austin Airport Advisory Commission. On the effective date of the new ordinance the former Airport Advisory Board was abolished and the terms of its members expired. The Austin Airport Advisory Commission (AAAC) review and make recommendations to the City Council on aviation projects that the Department of Aviation proposes for the capital improvements program, proposed aviation grants, aviation contracts, annual operating budget and quality of services at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA). In 2014, a new ordinance (20141211-204) changed the name from Austin Airport Advisory Commission to Airport Advisory Commission and increased the board from seven members to eleven members, who are appointed by City Council for up to four year terms.

The collection consists of meeting agendas and minutes, recommendations for council action, Director's Reports, aviation activity sheets (number of flights and passengers leaving and arriving), financial reports, sub-committee reports and other back-up materials for all meetings held by the Austin Airport Advisory Commission (formally the Airport Advisory Board) from November 1993 through December 2012. The records of this time period concern both the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA).
In addition to the records related to the regular day-to-day operations of the City of Austin airports, the records dated 1995 through 2000 contain a significant amount of materials concerning the construction of the "new" Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) and the future reuse of the Mueller Airport. Topics such as contracts for all aspects of the airport construction from building the terminal to the paving of the runways; Art in Public Places Project; airport hotel renovations; integration of advertising into the new terminal; landscaping; signage; the telecommunications strategy; and request for proposals (RFPs) for the various services to be available at the airport such as parking, rental cars and concessions are addressed in the meeting minutes and in the New Airport Project Team status reports.
