An Inventory of the Collection
The collection does not reveal the date on which the Current Review Book Club (original name) formed, however the earliest meeting minutes in the collection are dated November 7, 1939. These minutes do not indicate that this was the first meeting so it can be assumed the club formed before this date. According to the Standing Rules published in an early (circa 1939) Current Review Book Club yearbook there were originally 15 active members. The regular meetings were held on the first and third Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. from September through May. They had a program committee that selected the books to be reviewed and supervised the drawing of the books by the members. Membership appeared to consist solely of women. The 1948-1949 version of the Standing Rules added "its purpose shall be to keep in touch with current literature by review and discussion", the name of the club was changed to Current Book Review Club and the number of active members of the club was increased but capped at 20 members. Through the years little changed in the Standing Rules (Constitution and By-Laws) except the number of monthly meeting and the meeting time. By 1991 the wording of the purpose changed slightly to allow for "worthwhile books from the past."
The bulk of the collection consists of the Current Book Review Club meeting minutes dated from November 7, 1939 to May 24, 1994. The meeting minutes were originally housed in a variety of loose leaf binders and folders and were removed from the original housing and arranged in folders in chronological order. Integrated in the meeting minutes are treasurer's reports, program listings of the year's events and membership lists. Also included in the records are yearbooks circa 1939 through 1997. The yearbooks are a continuous series from the late 1940s to 1997. Also documented within the collection is the 1991 discussion of revising the Constitution and By-Laws.
